Antibiotics are life-saving drugs for infected patients. But the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in our lives may have a huge threat.

Experts studied clarithromycin, is a drug that can infect the heart rhythm. They found that compared with penicillin, clarithromycin increased by a deadly risk of heart health problems.

The authors concluded that this risk, although small, but it may cause avoidable deaths.

This study was conducted by statisticians at the National Serum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark epidemiological studies department Henrik Svanstr? M and colleagues wrote.

Clarithromycin is an antibiotic commonly used to treat infections. It belongs to the class of macrolide antibiotics. Macrolide antibiotics can change the heart rhythm.

This study investigated whether some antibiotics because of the increased risk of heart problems and increased mortality.

The researchers examined between 1997 to 2011 cases of patients taking antibiotics 40-77 years of age. In these patients, 160,297 bits taking clarithromycin, 588,988 bits taking roxithromycin (another macrolide antibiotic), as well as 4,355,309 bits taking penicillin.

The study authors did not have very severe disease include patients into the study.

In this study, 285 patients died because of heart problems.

Taking clarithromycin have 18 deaths, while taking roxithromycin have 32 deaths.

After calculating the other risk factors, the researchers determined the use of clarithromycin and 76% high risk of death from heart disease associated.

They estimated that for every one million cases of clarithromycin treatment cycle, this drug will cause 37 cases of cardiac death.

In other words, clarithromycin per 1000 person-years (the total number of years multiplied by the number of people taking the drug during medication) occupies a 5.3 cases of cardiac death.

Roxithromycin did not cause a significant increase in cardiac death.

The authors acknowledge that this study has some limitations. For example, they did not evaluate the information does not affect the heart-healthy lifestyle factors.

They concluded that while taking clarithromycin caused an insignificant risk of cardiac death, but it will cause additional deaths.
